Following distance

Outside the corporate limits of a city or village, a person shall not operate a motor vehicle with a gross weight, loaded or unloaded, in excess of 5,000 pounds within 500 feet of a similar vehicle traveling in the same direction, except to pass.

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating

The gross vehicle weight rating is established by the manufacturer and not a lawmaking body. Exceeding the vehicle weight rating is not a violation of any regulations governing the industry. However, it des crete other serious safety concerns and may violate and void the owner's warranty.

Operating authority
To operate a for-hire carrier of persons and/or property, a carrier must obtain authority. Application for interstate and intrastate authority may be made through the Michigan Public Service Commission.

Railroad Crossings

Before crossing a railroad track at grade, the driver of a motor vehicle transporting 16 or more passengers including the driver; a motor vehicle carrying passengers fro hire; or a motor vehicle that is required to be marked or placarded under 49 CFR, Parts 100 - 180, shall activate the vehicle hazard warning lights and stop the vehicle within 50 feet but not closer than 15 feet from the nearest rail.

The Michigan Vehicle code (257.699a) also adopts the railroad crossing requirements contained in 49 CFR 392.10 and 392.11.Temporary registration

A vehicle which has a temporary registration shall not be used for the transportation of passengers for hire, for the transportation of goods, wares or merchandise, or draw other vehicles transporting goods, wares or merchandise.

Third-lane use

On freeways having three or more lanes for travel in the same direction, trucks with a gross weight of more than 10,000 pounds,

 

a truck-tractor or a combination of a vehicle and trailer or semitrailer must operate in the two right-hand lanes only.

Truck speed limit
MVC 257.627(6)

A truck with a gross weight of 10,000 pounds or more, a truck-tractor with trailer or a combination of these vehicles shall not exceed a speed of 55 mph (includes some small trucks towing trailers).

Vehicle identification
MVC 257.723

All commercial vehicles with a single or combination gross weight rating or total gross weight of more than 5,000 pounds and all towing or platform bed wrecker road service vehicles in operation upon the public highways of this state shall have the name, city, and state or the registered logo or emblem of the registered owner of the vehicle, and lessee of the vehicle if the vehicle is being operated under lease, painted or permanently attached on each side of the vehicle in letters of not less than 3 inches in height, not lower than the bottom edge of the door. This information shall be in sharp color contrast to the background.

(2) Except for towing or platform bed wrecker road service vehicles, the identification requirements of subsection (1) may be met through the use of removable devices which meet the requirements of subsection (1). These devices shall be of durable construction and securely attached to each side of the motor truck or truck tractor. The removable devices shall be attached so that the identification is in a horizontal position.

(3) A vehicle in compliance with the identification requirements of the federal motor carrier safety regulations, 49 CFR parts 390-399, is considered to be in compliance with this section.

(4) This section does not apply to a truck eligible for and registered under a farm or manufacturer license plate, that has a gross vehicle weight of less than 10,000 pounds

All trucks or truck-tractors, trucks or truck-tractors with any other vehicle in combination and special mobile equipment are required to enter all open weigh stations
